This year’s International Open Access Week theme, "The Cost of Knowledge", invites us to reflect on the economic, human, and environmental costs of creating, sharing, and maintaining knowledge. It also raises questions about how growing commercial control affects its creation and access. Throughout the week, you can take part in dozens of online events on open access, open science, scholarly communication, and other related topics.

From the Information and Knowledge Service, we promote open science principles and help our research community conduct, publish, and share research openly. In collaboration with the Research Office, we offer funding to cover Article Processing Charges (APCs), as well as resources and services to advance open research. These include the new Open Science toolkit, designed to help make our research more accessible, transparent, and collaborative.

Esade Library, in collaboration with the Language Center and the Psychological and Counselling Service, is launching Esade Reads, a new initiative designed to foster a shared culture of reading and dialogue across the Esade community. Through regular sessions on campus, students, faculty, and staff are invited to pause, read together in silence, and connect afterwards through informal conversation and exchange.

The first session, Esade Reads — Chapter Zero, will take place on 19 March at 13:30 at Fusion Point (Esade Sant Cugat). Learn more about the initiative and register for the session.

STUDENT SUCCESS | RESOURCE HUB

The new AI Toolkit is now available to help you use Artificial Intelligence efficiently, critically, and responsibly in your studies.

Accessible via the Library Resource Hub > Toolkits section, this new site, developed by the Information & Knowledge Service (IKS), brings together everything you need to make the most of AI in your studies. Among its key features, you will find:

• The responsible AI use principles, aligned with Esade’s institutional guidelines.
• A capsule on acknowledging and referencing GenAI, explaining how to properly cite the use of generative AI tools.
• A GenAI workflow that integrates Library resources with GenAI tools to support your academic work.
• An AI tools list featuring selected and categorised AI models and tools evaluated by IKS.

LIBRARY SUBSCRIPTIONS | DIGITAL RESOURCES

During the 2024–25 academic year, the Library has expanded its collection of digital resources in response to the Esade community’s growing need for access to company data, academic journals, and news media. Here’s what’s new:

Digital Press

• El País, El Mundo, El Periódico, La Razón, Expansión, Cinco Días, El Economista, The Guardian, and over 7,000 other newspapers and magazines are now available through our new access to PressReader.
• You can also access La Vanguardia via the Kiosko y Más platform.

Magazines & Journals

• Our new subscription to Cambridge University Press Journals gives you access to over 420 peer-reviewed journals across fields like law, economics, politics, psychology, sociology, engineering, and more.
• Business Source Ultimate (BSU) replaces Business Source Premier, giving you a much more comprehensive package: over 3,600 available publications, including thousands of peer-reviewed journals. The BSU license also provides extended use rights for Harvard Business Review articles, covering all content published from October 1922 to the present. These rights allow the use of HBR content included in EBSCOhost products not only for research purposes but also for course use.
• The New Yorker and The Atlantic Monthly are now available via Flipster, offering high-quality cultural and political commentary in digital magazine format.

Specialized Resources

• PitchBook Academic Data Feed is now available for faculty, PhD students, and research staff. It provides detailed data on global VC, private equity, and M&A activity, including company, deal, investor, and fund information.
• Tirant Prime now offers enhanced legal research tools, including access to legislation, case law, doctrine, and Biblioteca Virtual Tirant. It also includes two AI-powered features: Sof-IA, a virtual assistant that helps produce legal texts, and Conversa, a conversational AI specialized in the Spanish legal system.
• The self-learning platform DataCamp, now open to the entire Esade community, offers interactive courses and skill tracks focused on data science, analytics, and AI—covering tools like Excel, Python, ChatGPT, Power BI, and more.

Sant Jordi is here! To celebrate this special holiday, we’re giving you a sneak peek at what we have planned:

URL Community Book Picks Site

Esade Library is proud to collaborate for the sixth year in the URL Community Book Picks Site, an online platform where members of the entire university community can share their book recommendations.

• We are now accepting submissions and encourage everyone to send in their favorite books along with a few lines explaining why you recommend them. To submit your recommendation, simply fill out this form before April 7th.

Once the site is published, the link will be shared with all participants so you can explore the literary suggestions from others. Additionally, on Sant Jordi day, we will have the site live! on InfoVision, our interactive screen at Sant Cugat, so you can explore it in person, on a big scale. We look forward to your contributions!

Biblioteca x Empresa i Societat Book Stand

On Sant Jordi itself, April 23rd, the Empresa i Societat student association will be hosting a special Book Stand at both the Barcelona and Sant Cugat campuses, selling books donated by the Esade Library. All proceeds from the sales will go to support solidarity causes. Be sure to stop by, pick up a book, and celebrate Sant Jordi while supporting a meaningful cause!

Alberto Núñez Fernández Book Launch

Join us on April 30th at the Pati Borja (Undergraduate Building) for the presentation of Alberto Núñez’s new book, El eslabón perdido de la pedagogía jesuita. Una propuesta inspirada en la Ratio studiorum.

The event will begin at 12:00 with a presentation by Xavier Mendoza (Associate Professor, Department of Strategy and General Management at Esade), followed by a roundtable discussion with Alberto Núñez (Lecturer, Department of Strategy and General Management at Esade), Isabel Vilafranca (Professor of Pedagogy at the University of Barcelona), and Oriol Quintana (Director of the Chair of Ethics and Christian Thought at IQS), and a Q&A session. The event will conclude with the open doors of the Biblioteca Borja.

This event is open to all members of the Esade community. Don’t miss the chance to explore new perspectives on pedagogy!

• If you’re looking for global business news, in-depth world events, or expert analysis on economics and business, you can access Financial Times, The New York Times, and The Economist.
• If you are looking for specific articles published in national press outlets such as La Vanguardia, El País, Expansión, El Mundo, and others, you can search them on MyNews. MyNews provides access to the original articles from over 1,500 media outlets, including +750 national, +550 regional, and +150 international sources. For a broader search, Dow Jones Factiva offers access to over 35,000 international news sources in plain text, ideal for comprehensive global news tracking.

EXAM SEASON | STUDENT SUCCESS

As you gear up for exam season, don’t forget about the resources the Library has to offer. Here are 5 Library essentials you need to know to make the most of your study time and boost your exam performance.

Opening Hours

Our Libraries are open to support you throughout the exam period (until December 20th). Take a look at our hours for Barcelona and Sant Cugat:

• Monday to Friday: 8:00 to 00:00
• Weekends: 9:00 to 21:00

You can also access Libraries from other Universitat Ramon Llull institutions, such as Blanquerna, IQS, and La Salle. Just make sure to bring your TUI card or have the myEsade app on your phone, as you may be required to identify yourself.

Available Study Spaces

The Library offers a variety of study spaces to meet your needs during exam season. Each Library has a silent room, specifically designed for those who need a quiet environment to study or work without interruptions. We also provide group study rooms (two in Barcelona and four in Sant Cugat) equipped to foster collaboration and teamwork.

New! To help support your study, we’ll be opening pop-up study rooms in Sant Cugat for all students. These additional rooms are available in both the Undergraduate and Graduate buildings. Here’s the schedule:

• Monday 25th to Friday 29th November: 17:30 to 21:00
  Undergrad Building: Room 009
  Graduate Building: Rooms 2D02, 3D09, 3D10, 3D11, 3D12
• Monday 2nd to Thursday 5th December: 17:30 to 21:00
  Undergrad Building: Room 009
  Graduate Building: Rooms 3D09, 3D10, 3D11, 3D12, 3D13

And if it’s been a while since you visited the Libraries, you’ll notice the newly added furniture: electrified tables for easy device charging, as well as relaxing chairs for moments of rest between study sessions.

Special Resources

You don’t have to physically be in one of our Libraries to access a wealth of resources. With over 45,000 ebooks and 10,000 e-journals available to you 24/7, you can study and research from anywhere with an internet connection. In addition, you have access to more than 60 databases and 30 research guides, all designed to support your studies and research.

For physical books, you can conveniently use the self-checkout machines available at both campuses. Don’t forget, you can always access your Library account to manage your loans and reservations. And, in case you missed it, in Pedralbes, we’ve introduced a section dedicated to legal codes and manuals to facilitate the easy location and consultation of these important resources.

Library Services

In addition to our study spaces and online resources, the Library offers services to enhance your exam preparation. You can book a VR headset with 48 hours' notice to practice your presentations in a virtual environment or enjoy recreational content.

Free Coffee

Extra! For the early birds only, during the week of December 2nd-5th, we will have free coffee available in both Libraries starting at 8:00 until it runs out. It’s first-come, first-served, so be sure to grab a cup while it lasts!

And remember: Be respectful to people, space, and resources. Speak quietly, turn devices to silent mode, no eating, only covered drinks allowed, and no reserving seats for later use. Let’s keep the Library a comfortable space for everyone.

RESEARCH | DOCUMENT REQUEST

Esade Library has enhanced its Discovery tool with new document retrieval features. Now, the entire Esade community can access a broader range of electronic articles and book chapter scans, as well as request physical book loans from catalan universities (PUC). Additionally, academic and research staff can request physical book loans from national and international libraries.

Improvements

• More simplicity: Request all types of documents directly from the Discovery interface.
• More access: Retrieve digital journal articles and book chapters from institutions around the world, without intermediaries.
• More efficiency: Track the delivery status and receive digital requests within 24 hours.
• More options: Request up to 30 documents per user, including both physical and electronic materials.
